4 Clear Signs That Your Dentures Need to Be Adjusted

Your dentures were supposed to make your life easier, but you find yourself worrying about them more and more these days. You were told that it would take some time to get used to your new teeth, but that period has long passed, so these annoyances are brand new.

Is it time to call your dentist? Here are 4 definitive signs that your dentures need professional attention.

They Won’t Stay in Place

Are your dentures frequently slipping and sliding in your mouth? This is not only uncomfortable, but stressful as you don’t know if your teeth will fall out at some inopportune moment.

It could be because the prosthetic is worn down from daily wear and tear, or the shape of your gums and jawbone might have changed over time.

They Smell

Ideally, you should be cleaning your dentures at least twice a day and soaking them at night. If you’re following this routine, and they still have a foul odor, it might be time for a deeper-level treatment that you can’t do at home.

They Interfere with Speech

Are you stumbling over certain words or syllables that weren’t a problem in the recent past? Does it seem like your tongue just can’t find the right place to go? Again, this could point to your dentures being less stable and secure than they should be.

They Make Your Mouth Sore

Do you have high pressure or sore spots on your gums where your dentures usually sit? Was this not the case right after you got them?

If you’re experiencing any pain, it’s important to have your dentures looked at soon, as long-term irritation and inflammation can increase your risk of infection and even oral cancer in some cases.

How a Dentist Can Help

You’re not suddenly expected to be a denture expert just because you have one. There are a wide variety of reasons why the problems above can occur, and rather than trying to figure it out and fix things yourself (which is never a good idea), it’s better to reach out to your dentist.

They can look at your prosthetic and mouth and determine what is the most direct way to solve your issues. That might include relining the denture, replacing the prosthetic completely, or upgrading to dental implants if you want the most stability possible.

Your denture is supposed to make everything easier, not harder, so don’t hesitate to talk to your dentist if you experience any of the issues listed above.
